Character History:
Nate was born a hemophiliac. After getting a particularly bad cut on his knee at age 5 that wouldn’t heal his parents became over protective, doing their best to keep him safe and at home and sheltered from the world. As a result Nate, isn’t a big fan of the outdoors and turned to books and movies and fell in love with history. His exposure to the movie Indiana Jones is what convinced him to become a historian.
Growing up his father told him stories about his Grandfather Henry Heywood, aka Commander Steel of the Justice Society of America. Even though information about Commander Steel is classified he knows all the stories from his father. He grew up idolizing his grandfather the superhero and a part of him always wanted to be just like him, a hero.
Nate graduated from school with a PHD and became a historian who specialized in historical reconstruction and deduction, or as he says, he’s a time detective. In 2016 he starts to notice patterns in history, the same people showing up in different locations and at different times and usually with a ship that seems to appear and disappear at will and fly. He notices the last account of the ship is in New York in 1942 where is disappears under the harbor as an atom bomb also goes off with it.
Figuring out who the people are he manages to confront Oliver Queen and convince him that his friends are in danger white also telling him that he knows Oliver is the Green Arrow. Oliver is convinced to help him and they both head to New York to find the Waverider at the bottom of the sea and Mick Rory the sole person on board in stasis. They wake Mick up and find out that the Legends were in 1942 because of a time aberration that gave the Nazis an atom bomb which they used to blow of New York and prolong the war for another three years. In trying to stop this, the Rip Hunter, Captain of the Waverider, pilots the ship to intercept the bomb that has been launched from a submarine, by doing so he will be sacrificing the ship and the crew. To save them he scatters the rest of the team through time and puts Mick (who is too injured to time jump) into stasis. Which is where Nate and Ollie come in because they woke him up seventy-four years later.
Ollie leaves Mick in the hands of Nate who he says can help locate the rest of the team since he is a time detective. Nate and Mick team up to rescue the legends from history. Nate is able to find everyone except Rip who there is no record of anywhere. Tabling that for the time the Legends with the help of Nate set the time aberration to rights in New York 1942 and Nate is awed by the fact that he just helped in saving time and history. He decides that he wants to do this; he wants to stay on with the Legends.
After fixing history in 1942 the team plans to head back to the Waverider they are interrupted by the Justice Society of America. Nate recognizes his grandfather, Henry Heywood, aka Commander Steel, and calls him Commander Steel prompting Henry to punch him in the face. This, compounded with the fact that Martin tells them they are time travelers, starts a fight that leaves them in JSA custody. When the JSA, thinking they are a bunch of crazy people that need to be put away, go to question them Nate, trying to convince them they are from the future and not nazis, tells Henry the number on his dog tags which he says are not on record on any sort of official documents. When Henry demands to know how Nate knows Nate pulls out the dog tags around his neck stating that Henry gave them to his wife when his son was born and his son passed them down to his own son, Nate. He tells Henry that he is his grandson. Henry doesn’t take it well but is convinced and the Legends are let out to talk to the rest of the team, including Rex Tyler who before Nate knew the team had told the Legends that they should never come to 1942. Rex doesn’t recognize any of them (thanks time travel). The JSA lets them go and tells them to leave as they head off to Paris on a mission to find Baron Krieger.
The legends leave, and are fully prepared to sent Nate home to 2016. He and Sara argue about it, she is worried that since he is untrained he will just get himself killed, and he tells her that because he is a historian he is the best person to be helping them. In the middle of the argument Nate realizes that his dog tags are gone, he never takes them off which means they vanished. Sara tells him that means history has changed and Nate consults his notes noting that they need to go back to 1942, because the entire JSA is going to die in Paris.
Nate helps the Legends figure out where the JSA is and where to look for them (even if he can’t figure out how to work the touch screen on board computer). Sara seeks Nate out and sees the bruising on his body; Nate plays it off because he doesn’t want anyone to know that he is a hemophiliac because they won’t let him help. She offers him a pill that will let him translate any language he hears and he declines telling her that he speaks, Italian, German, French, Latin and Japanese. Sara is surprised; “you speak six different languages, you have a tendency to run towards danger and you’re related to a member of the JSA, why did you become a historian?” Nate tells her it’s a long story, when really its because for him it was the safest option. The team decides to infiltrate a nazi nightclub and they find Vixen, aka Amaya, who is not happy to see them. Nate overhears the baron’s plan and they are getting ready to leave when Ray won’t salute and fight breaks out and the rest of the JSA show up. They bring the JSA on board and tell them that they are going to help them, and the two teams conclude that an exchange is being made the next day and that they need to secure an askaran amulet.
Meanwhile Sara and Nate are talking about Nate’s grandfather, Nate says Henry is avoiding him, and Sara points out its hard to see your future staring you in the face. She notices that a cut on Nate’s arm hasn’t stopped bleeding from the fight at the club and she figures out his secret. She tells him that he could have died, and he tells her that he’s never felt more alive. He tells her that when he was five he cut his knee and his mother never again let him out of the house until he was sixteen (we are assuming that’s slightly exaggerated). He points out that now he’s a grown man and he can make his own decisions. Sara tells him no, not on this ship and she refuses to let him go out on the mission the next day.
“Look, I know you don’t think I can add anything to this team, but out there? Out there is history and no one knows more about it than me.”
He gets benched for the next day.
The teams intercept the exchange and secure the amulet. Only one hiccup occurs. Ray and Amaya go after Baron Krieger, who has injected himself with a serum that he received from a time traveler, the serum gives the person injected with it enhanced powers. Krieger attacks the team and they retreat, only to have to leave Ray and Amaya behind.
To buy them time, Ray tells Krieger that he can replicate the “super serum” and improve it. He does.
Nate confronts his grandfather on the ship while they are regrouping. He tells him that he used to fantasize about meeting him, that he’s always been a hero to Nate. Henry tells him that he doesn’t want to be a hero to anyone, that the look Nate gave him when they first met, he’s seen it before, people look up to him and try to act like him and its likely to get them killed. He says he does what he does so that other people don’t have to, so Nate won’t have to.
Nate tells him that his whole life, people have tried to shield him from the world, when all he ever wanted to be was a solider like his grandfather. Henry tells him that “It’s a parent’s job to protect their child, but it’s a child’s obligation to themselves to live their own lives. You can and should do whatever you set your mind to. You don’t have to be a solider to be a hero.”
He leaves Nate to think about his words.
The two teams head out to save Ray and Amaya, once secure the JSA orders an airstrike on the rest of the nazi base.
Henry is running from an enhanced Krieger when Nate, who ignored the fact that he was benched and went out to help, pulls up on a motorcar telling him to get on. They outrun Krieger as the airstrike starts and Krieger gets hit. Nate stops the motorcar to survey the wreckage but they aren’t clear of the airstrike and a bomb hits them sending both Nate and Henry flying.
They rush Nate to the medical bay, he’s hemorrhaging from the inside and he’s dying. His body won’t heal itself because of his disease. Ray, who still has the serum he fixed, injects Nate with it. Almost immediately his vitals start to improve and he starts to heal, the serum changing him.
He wakes back up when they are returning the JSA to New York, and his grandfather is there watching over him. Henry apologizes for not living up to the version of Commander Steel that Nate always dreamed of, and Nate tells him he likes the real version of him better. While they are talking the dog tags show back up on Nate’s neck, signaling that they prevented the death of Henry.
“Not bad for a Historian.” Henry shakes his head and corrects him, “Not bad for a hero.”
The legends drop the JSA off and head off; Nate not yet knowing what the serum did to him.
Abilities/Special Powers:
Third-Person Sample:
He was falling. Of that he was sure- it's kind of hard to miss falling. Especially when the last thing he remembered was lying in the med bay and feeling pretty terrible. He'd just fallen back to sleep after saying goodbye to Henry. Then there was an alarm and the next thing he knew the floor was dropping out from under him.
He was pretty sure he did not sign up for this.
He had just narrowly survived dying...in France... during World War Two, he didn't want to die by suddenly falling through the air. The panic he felt was momentary but terrifying as he neared the ground. Then suddenly he was changing, his body was changing and he hit the ground hard, his body making more of an impact then he anticipated.
He laid there in the dirt for a while, breathing deeply, the panic subsiding as he realized he was still alive. The question of how was now filling his mind. He sat up and looked down at his hands, only they weren't his hands- they were metal and silver and shiny and so was the rest of his arm- both arms. A quick look told him that yeah, his entire body was now metal.
"What the hell?"
Ok, this was no time to panic; he just had to think. He could think, he could do that, he was used to using his brain to figure out situations. They had told him that he healed because Ray’s serum had done something to him. Right. So. The serum made him metal? It…gave him powers??...It gave him powers. And he thought traveling through time was the coolest thing that ever happened to him. Now he had powers.
Now, to figure out how to turn those powers off…
First-Person Sample:
[ So it’s taken him some time but he’s finally figured out how to not suddenly be made of metal. It was a relief to actually see his skin again. After that panic fest was over he started to explore. He found his network device, sort of explored the grounds, trying to stay mostly out of the way. This place didn’t make any sense but after scrolling through the network that seemed to be par for the course.
He was seated in the garden when he turned on the video feed, the giant crater he made when he landed was slightly visible in the background. ]
So uh, hi Wonderland? I guess. Just gonna warn you now, there’s a giant hole in your garden. Sorry about that. I would have chosen to get here a different way if I was given a choice. Falling from the sky isn’t really something I’d like to repeat.
[ Nor is turning into a giant metal man, although it did save his life. ]
I guess I should introduce myself before I start asking you all questions. I’m Nate Heywood, historian, time detective, legend- that seems a little pompous when I say it aloud. Legends are what my team calls themselves. Speaking of which, if anyone knows anything about them, or say the Waverider, or how I can get back to it, that would be great.
[ He goes to sign off but pauses. One more question. ]
Right and, this might be weird. Did anyone else...change when they got here? Like one minute you’re a normal person and the next suddenly you’re made of metal...or something like that? Is that a thing this place does to you?
[ He looks at the camera for a moment before nodding to himself and switching it off, now all he had to do was wait- he hoped. ]

Abilities/Special Powers:
- Powers:
Organic Steel Transformation: He has the ability to transform his entire body into an organic form of alloy. While transformed there is an increase in height and build but he retains his normal level of mobility. As a result of his powers he has a slightly increased healing factor and once transformed his injuries appear to heal completely. He is also more durable than a normal human, resistant to injury from bullets, knives, and even Ion blasts from the ATOM suit. He also is able to survive falls from great heights. Nate is also stronger than a normal human while transformed, by at least quintuple his normal levels. He is however vulnerable to weapons made of Dwarf star alloy.
Abilities:
Genius-level intellect: Nate is a PHD holding historian, and his powers of deduction are high. He is also adept with machinery, creating a device to detect time aberrations after learning about how time travel works. He is also fluent in six languages: English, German, French, Japanese, Italian, and Latin. His ability to recall facts from history, including exact dates and places also show his high intellect. He also happens to be a fairly decent sketch artist.
